Free Motion Quilting 101



Free motion quilting is great for bags and small projects, as well as for finishing your quilts.  Learn the basics of free motion quilting on your sewing machine in this 3 hour class.

Requirements:
Sewing machine in good working order - Bring power cord, foot pedal and user's manual. Free motion foot for your machine You need to know how to put your machine in free motion mode, how to drop the feed dogs, and if necessary, how to adjust the stitch length. Straight stitch plate for your machine if you have one but don't buy one just for this class. Two quilt sandwiches approximately fat quarter size with a solid fabric on top and bottom and batting in the middle. Muslin is fine. Quilter's safety pins (if you don't have any, some will be provided). Quilting gloves (Machingers are recommended). Cotton thread on top and in bobbin. Bring at least one color that contrasts with the fabric in your sandwich and one that blends, with a bobbin for each. Aurifil 50 wt. thread is a good one to start with, but bring any that you already have 30 wt to 50 wt. Quilting 90/14, Microtex 80/12, or Top Stitch 90/14 machine needles. If you have a thicker thread (30wt.), bring a bigger needle (Top Stitch 90/14). Paper and pen or pencil.
